HIV is called the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and this is the virus that causes AIDS.

Over 60 million people have been affected with Hiv since it was first diagnosed 20 years ago.

It is also estimated that between the 2000 to 2020 over 68 million people will die premiturely from aids.

All persons infected with HIV can spread it to others through unprotected sex, needle sharing, and donating Blood or other tissues. Infected mothers can also spread HIV to newborns.
Results from the study show that a single oral dose of the antiretroviral drug nevirapine (NVP) given to an HIV-infected woman in labor and another to her baby within three days of birth reduces the transmission rate of HIV by half compared with a similar short course of AZT. As with any disease prevention is better than a cure some steps to prevent contraction of the virus.

Are condoms effective at preventing infection with the HIV disease?
Yes. Studies have shown that if a condom is used correctly every time you have sex, this is highly effective in providing protection against HIV.

What is the Female Condom?
The female condom is a polyurethane sheath or pouch worn by a woman during sex. It lines the vagina entirely and it helps to prevent HIV.

Sex is by far the most common way of passing on HIV but next in line is transmission throught sharing injecting equipment with other people amongs drug users.

How can these risks be reduced?

Stopping injecting drug use.

If you are going to participate in injecting drug use then you need to use sterile needles, syringes and other equipment every time.

Never share injecting equipment.

Cleaning equipment between use.

Maybe with all the risks involved with sex and having safe sex its a lot safer to get your sex over the internet.

Diagnose earlier by having HIV testing if symptoms occur.
